“Then what’s the purpose?!”

Accessibility buttons / automatic door openers play a crucial role for people with disabilities to move through this world with independence and autonomy. A broken button takes that away. In the past week we have come across two, one being at an event celebrating and supporting people with disabilities! We have to do better.

Address Broken Accessibility Buttons

Yes, technology often breaks or malfunctions without warning. That’s why training and protocols are implemented to quickly resolve the situation. When essential access features are not maintained or repaired promptly, it sends a message that the needs of disabled individuals are not a priority. Businesses or building managers may place a broken button lower on their to-do list than an elevator for example, because it will “impact less people.” A perspective that reinforces societal discrimination – one person affected is one too many. And with a universal design this accessibility feature provides benefits to many others, including parents with strollers and elderly individuals.

It’s simple! The button breaks, fix it as soon as possible. The longer it does not function, the longer people are denied their right of equal access to a building. It’s important to note, those with disabilities do not always have someone with them – this is often assumed – another mindset we must change.

Also, broken buttons pose significant safety concerns for everyday users along with the broader community. In emergency situations such as fires, natural disasters, or evacuations, accessible door buttons are imperative to reach safety without facing unnecessary barriers or delays.

Ultimately, the impact of a broken button extends far beyond inconvenience. Equal Accessibility highlights this issue to express the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure equal access and inclusion for all members of society. Every person deserves the freedom to navigate space with dignity.
